Town of Boston Comprehensive Plan Update

The Town last updated its Comprehensive Plan in 2002. Since that time, the Town has seen a pattern of continued growth through, among other things, subdivision of larger parcels for additional single-family home sites and construction of some multi-family homes. In recent years, it has wrestled with the implications of having limited land zoned for commercial uses (both in total area and the size of available parcels), the proper scale and scope of commercial development, and in some cases with the harmonious integration of proposed development with adjacent residential areas, some of which have historical significance.

The Town has developed some regulations for solar energy facilities but will benefit from guidance on siting and regulations for alternative energy projects such as solar and wind, as well as for telecommunications facilities including 5G equipment. It seeks to protect, preserve, and encourage its history of agricultural production, and the comprehensive plan update should include guidance for encouraging new opportunities for agricultural development, such as agricultural tourism and sales of local food and beverage products.

The Town now seeks to update its comprehensive plan to guide land use regulations for the next 10 to 20 years, to ensure orderly growth and change which results in a healthy and cohesive community. The plan to be updated is available online at THIS LINK. Boston’s Town Code, including laws recently enacted, is available at: https://ecode360.com/BO0557.
